The Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa is a Roman Catholic international missionary congregation founded by Teresa Kearney, more commonly known as Mother Kevin or Mama Kevina. As members of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis of Assisi, we make a life-long commitment. Spirituality, Community and Service are integral to our Gospel way of life.
We currently have members in Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Sudan, America, Ireland, Scotland and England. Until recently we have also had Sisters in South Africa. Africa has always been the major focus for our work, but wherever we are, we have a particular concern for the most needy and marginalized members of society.
Having served in Africa since 1903, we have been privileged to work with many local people and communities in helping them build their capacity to develop in ways that honour their dignity and address their needs. Our endeavours have been made possible through the support of Parish communities, individual benefactors and donor agencies.
The following statement expresses how we see our calling in life:
The Vocation of a Franciscan Missionary
Sister for Africa
is to be a woman of Faith,
consecrated to God
in a Community of Love, Joy and Simplicity.
Impelled by the love of Christ,
she is ready to be sent on Mission.
She responds with courage and zeal
to the real needs of God's people in Africa
and wherever we are on mission.
She approaches the people of God with Reverence
so that together we may grow
in the fullness of the Gospel.
